DVD RW: Rewritable and re recordable

DVD-RW, this stands for re writing and recordable DVD format. This has the capacity to re write the data and also to re record. In fact it shares a great similarity with the CD-RW or DVD+RW. The data on a DVD-RW disc can be erased or deleted and recorded over numerous times without damaging the actual medium. A DVD-RW disc is a rewritable optical disc that has a storage capacity that is equal to a DVD-R. So the storage capacity of DVD RW is 4.7 GB. The recent format has been developed by Pioneer in the November of 1999 and has got the approval from the DVD Forum. DVD RW is playable in about 75% of conventional DVD players. The smaller Mini DVD-RW possesses a storage capacity of 1.46 GB, coupled with a diameter of 8 cm.

The primary and the most important advantage of DVD-RW over DVD-R is its ability to erase or delete and rewrite to a DVD-RW disc. DVD-RW discs have the capability to write about 1,000 times before needing replacement.  DVD-RW discs are mainly and basically used for volatile data, such as backups or collections of files. Currently, they are also increasingly used for home DVD video recorders. Another benefit of using rewritable disc is that if there are writing errors when recording data, the disc is not ruined and can still store or keep data by erasing or deleting the faulty data. So DVD RW is more used compared to the DVD R because of it additional advantages.
